Politician/Councilor/Advisor
(by Rev. Garett Lepper)
Advanced Career
Politics in much of the Old World is the
domain of the nobility. Land and the authority that it brings
empower most nobility and shape the political environment. Politics
in the Southern Old World is dramatically different. Yes, land
is important there and the nobility do play an important role,
but most influence is played out by Merchant Princes, those
who not only own land, but own ships, merchant houses, and capital:
the merchants, the financiers, and the guild members of the
Southern Old World. A few cities in Tilea have even dabbled
with republican forms of government where power is divided among
elected representatives.
Thus the political environment of the Southern Old World is
dramatically different now from the traditional form of feudal
politics practiced in Bretonnia, the Empire, and Kislev. In
Tilea for example, everyone seems to be involved in politics,
from the agitators on the street, the mercenary captains in
garrisons, the lawyers in their courts, the merchants in the
guild house, to even the captains of merchant fleets. Politics
can be a fluid, even volatile field here and because of these
demands politicians have cropped up in the courts of merchant
princes and in the senates of the republics.
These politicians, councilors, and advisors have mastered the
arts of compromise, threats, innuendo, outrage, flattery, and
character assassination. They carry out the political will of
their families, allies, or patrons through political channels.
Laws are created, armies raised or disbanded, programs funded,
and policies changed at the behest of politicians. While they
fight wars of words, the repercussions of their struggles are
real, people exiled or executed, towns and villages razed, and
political rivals destroyed. The best politicians wield the power
of kings and emperors, but for the unlucky or unskilled, they
risk infamy, exile, execution, or imprisonment.

Paymaster
(by Rev. Garett Lepper)
Advanced Career
In the Southern Old World, and in
particular Tilea, mercenaries have become a time-honored institution,
and a highly organized institution as well. To meet the ever
changing demands for mercenaries a group of intermediaries has
developed to ensure that nobles and others can recruit the assistance
that they need. Thus, a noblemen's first and only step is to
hire and fund a Paymaster. The Paymaster works as this intermediary.
Upon being paid and told what the demands are, the Paymaster,
often an ex-mercenary themselves use their contacts to hire
bands of mercenaries. From this point on the demands of the
noble patrons are made through the Paymaster to the Mercenary
Captains, since a noblemen may often hire a number of companies
to carry out his will.
The advantages of this system are numerous. Firstly, it makes
it quick and easy for mercenaries to be hired since the Paymaster
usually has numerous contacts and experience working with others.
Secondly, it isolates the nobility from the demands and defeats
of his hired mercenaries. Should their mercenaries carry out
some reprehensible act, the chain of command insulates the nobility
from the actions of their hirelings, since they are technically
contracted out to the Paymaster rather than the noble. The nobility
often remain aloof of the day to day finances and thus the lump
payment to the Paymaster often relieves them of the burden of
managing transactions. The Paymaster can also work with merchants,
bankers, and financiers to aid in funding mercenary companies
and the nobility and republicans will hire Paymasters or employ
their own to help develop budgets for campaigns.
Thus, the Paymaster bears a heavy responsibility. Success is
usually credited to the noble, but failure falls squarely on
the Paymaster who is deemed to have employed ineffective mercenaries
or embezzled the funds. Most Paymasters don't last long in the
profession, but a handful that do that develop excellent contacts
can play pivotal roles politically and have even acted as "kingmakers".

Torero
(by Leif U. Schrader)
Advanced Career
Bullfighting is a sport almost exclusively found in Estalia.
Only the most southwestern parts of Bretonnia know bullfighting,
but this is done in a non official fashion.
Towns and cities have an area, often outside the town, which
is used for the corrida, as bullfighting is called in Estalia.
When no corrida takes place, the arena is often used to sell
cattle. Very few cities are rich enough to have an arena that
is only used for the corrida.
The corridas generally take place twice a year on the days of
the equinox. Other corridas take place on important date, like
the birth of son or daughter to the king. On the death of King
Felipe II of Magritta a corrida took place, although this was
not officially sanctioned and watch had to end the fight.
Bullfighters, called toreros, can be professionals or amateurs.
Professional toreros are very rare outside cities. They often
come from the class of the Hidalgos, where the young men try
to earn respect and money by this sport. Amateurs are often
peasants, farmers and other people of these classes. Should
be prove to be skilled in the sport, they can become professional
toreros. Professional toreros spend most of their time practising
and showing off. Successful toreros do not need to worry about
money (or women). They can find enough sponsors that pay just
to be seen with them.
Toreros have to fight only with a rapier. Professional toreros
fight on horses, while amateurs have to fight on foot. The horses
have thick leather armour that protects them against the worse
injuries. The toreros however have no armour. Should they be
thrown out of the saddle, they have to continue fighting on
foot.
Most of the
time they fight against bulls, but sometimes rhinoceros or Lustrian
buffaloes are used as opponents. Basically any wild beast that
attacks by charging can be used for bullfighting.

Sindicalista
Crimeboss: Capo (by Rev. Garett Lepper)
Advanced Career
When used as a general term, "sindicalista"
refers to the Tilean guilds, but it also refers to "The
Sindicalista", or organized crime. Organized crime, based
upon family and local relations is a major, if secretive power
in Tilea. Outsiders depict it as a large, conspiratorial organization
but in truth it is a large association of fragmented and often
warring families and groups.
The Sindicalista
is involved in all manner of things, smuggling, theft, racketeering,
gambling, slaving, murder, blackmail, and any other illegal
yet profitable activity. Due to the disorganized nature of government
in Tilea and the secretive nature of these organizations, the
sindicalistas have been nearly impossible to suppress, and most
nobles, merchants, and others have come to terms with their
existence and often work with them for their own financial and
political gain.
Part of their
power is the solidarity within the organization - its members
adhere to a code of loyalty that most will never betray since
most of the members are part of their own family. There are
unspoken rules between families that must be respected and the
world of the Sindicalista has any many intricate rules of decorum
as the nobility.
At the head
of any local or regional Sindicalista family is the Capo, who
may be the head or merely one of the captains serving the head
of the family. The Capo makes all the major decisions of the
family and they are among the most powerful leaders in the community.
Some rule as beneficient granfathers, others as bloody tyrants,
most fall somewhere in between. Their power and influence cannot
be denied and they are considered by many to be the true rulers
of Tilea.

Tilean
Henchman: "Fattore" (by
Rev. Garett Lepper)
Advanced Career
Tilea is a land of upheaval and conflict and mercenaries and
bodyguards have long been maintained my the nobility to hold
onto their power. Over time many of these groups have become
institutions in Tilean society, among these the Fattori (sing.
"fattore"). The Fattori are primarily a rural phenomenon,
hired swords whose duty it is to enforce the laws and edicts
of the noblility and landlords. The resentment of the "contadini"
or the peasants has often resulted in bloody revolts against
their social betters.
To enforce their edicts they would hire thugs from outside their
community to carry out their work. To strike fear in the contadini
and to bolster their own strength, these henchmen, known as
Fattori bred vicious dogs trained to attack people. With their
weapons, brutality, and dogs, these fattori proved apt at suppressing
dissent and keeping the nobility in line. Over time these fattori
have become an institution and the image of booted thug, armed
with clubs and brassknuckles and accompanied by a vicious dog
is now a symbol of the oppresive nature of feudalism in rural
Tilea.
Some nobility have kept their fattori as retainers in their
town and city homes. These fattori function as bodyguards and
hired thugs, menacing those who would dare approach the nobility.
Some fattori have found employment in crime syndicates where
their penchant for violence proves sufficient for the job.

Tilean
Landlord: "Latifondista"(by Rev. Garett Lepper)
Advanced Career
The nobility of Tilea tend to have what can only be termed as
confrontational relationships with their serfs, or "Contadini".
The constant warfare, the rampages of mercenaries and bandits,
and the common peasant uprisings result in a nobility who are
constantly besieged. Many nobility do not remain on their land
to monitor it but hire overseers, stewards, or landlords. A
person hired to oversee an estate in the absence of its owner
is titled in Tilean "Latifondista". A Latinfondista,
sometimes an ex-mercenary or a wandering noble is responsible
the estate of the nobility and to ensure that the work is done
and that the "contadini" meet their feudal obligations.
Any given Latinfondista is probably despised by the contadini
that they oversee, for they tend to resort to threats, violence,
and intimidation to ensure the running of the estate. It is
there duty to dispense punishment when requirements are not
met and to carry out processes according to local laws. Some
are little more than sadistic thugs, some simply rigid adherents
to the law. Nearly all believe that any display of compassion
will result in the loss of authority and condemn any fraternization
with the lower classes.
