Bretonnia - land of chivalry?

by Richard Bunyan

If I were to mention Bretonnia to you, what would you think of? The first thought that enters my mind is, of course, that we covered Bretonnia in issue 2. As nice as that is, it is not relevant. The next thing that comes to my mind is a land of chivalry, honour, and knights in shining armour.

It is commonly accepted that Bretonnia is a land where everyone accepts chivalry, and everyone believes in the Lady of the Lake, but why does this statement have to be true? Surely not every man, woman, child and knight in the land believes in the Lady of the Lake? Bretonnia must adapt and evolve if it is to survive in the current age, and some people will always be able to be converted to another God if he/she sounds better to them.

Bretonnia as a land stretches the sea of claws in the north, Estalia and Tilia in the south, The grey mountains and Athel Loren in the East, and the Great Ocean in the west. It is a land of many races, from the high elves across the Great Ocean, to the wood Elves of Athel Loren, to the Men of the Empire in the East, to the mercenaries in the south. Many races intermixing, even if only at the borders, will surely pull away some who should know better.

In the south there is Estalia and Tilia, and the lands of the Mercenary. It is said in the Dogs of War article in the Games Workshop Annual 2002 that a dogs of war army may hire Bretonnians as heavy cavalry. I can see no reason why the opposite should not be true, and the Bretonnians who do not necessarily follow the lady and chivalry might hire the mercenaries.

So, where do all these disgruntled people go, the armies of Bretonnia will not accept anyone who does not believe in the lady, for they would not kneel and prey to her for her blessing. They might find a career that does not require too much belief, but if they want to fight, they are stuck. On these facts I have devised an army list for a possible renegade Bretonnian force where the knights involved have abandoned the Lady of the Lake, and have decided to hire out mercenaries to fight for them.

Bretonnian Renegades

Lords

No rightful Bretonnian Duke would leave his lands, even if he did not believe in the Lady of the Lake. Neither would a prophetess, who would not be allowed to leave. Even if you hire a Mercenary Lord, a Bretonnian *must* be the army general.

Mercenary General - Use out of Dogs of War (dow) army list
Hireling Wizard Lord - Use out of dow army list

Heroes

Some Bretonnian Heroes might renegade in this way, but not many.

Paymaster - Use the statistics line from DoW, and the options from the Bretonnian BSB.
0-1 Paladin - As I said, not many. You may take 1 Bretonnian hero for your general if you so wish. Use the Paladin stats out the Bretonnian list.
Captain - Use out of dow army list
Hireling Wizard - Use out of dow army list. There is no Bretonnian wizard choice (Although your hireling may be female if you wish) because I do not think a "Damsel of the *Lady*" would still have her powers if she left the lady.

Core Units

There would be some of the lower rank knights that would renegade, enough to field several units, and, obviously, a larger army would accumulate more to themselves.
*rule* - You are allowed to field only 1 unit of Bretonnian lances per 1000 points of the game. So you could take 2 lances in a 2000 point game.

Knights Errant - You may take as many units of Knights Errant out of the Bretonnia list as you want, but for only 19 points per model. Remember Bretonnian knights do not pay for a standard bearer.
Knights of the Realm - You may take 1 unit of Knights of the Realm per 100 points out of the Bretonnian list as you want, but for only 23 points per model.
Heavy Cavalry - Use out of dow army list at +2 points per model (remember, no lance formation on these)
Light Cavalry - Use out of dow army list at +2 points per model
Crossbowmen - Use out of dow army list at +2 points per model
Duellists - Use out of dow army list at + 2 points per model

Special Units

One Bretonnian unit per 1000 points.

Bowmen - Although why you'd want these instead of Crossbows I have no idea - Use out of Bretonnian army list
Squires - Use out of Bretonnian army list at + 1 point per model
Pikemen - Use out of dow army list at + 1 point per model
Ogres - Use out of dow army list to a maximum of 5 models.
Dwarves - Use out of dow army list at +1 point per model.
0-1 Halflings - Use out of dow army list

Rare Units

No Bretonnian ones here, Knights either searching for the grail, or having seen it would not abandon the Lady of the Lake.

Cannons - Use out of dow army list
Halfling Hot pot - Use out of dow army list

Regiments of Renown.
Renegade Bretonnians may hire the following Regiments of Renown as though they were a non dow army.

Pirazzo's Lost Legion
Ricco's Republican Guard
Vespero's Vendetta
Marksmen of Miragliano
Al Muktar's Desert Dogs
Braganza's Besiegers
Voland's Vendetors
Lumpin Croop's Fighting Cocks
Long Drong's Slayer Pirates
Asarnil the Dragonlord
Bronzino's Galloper Guns
